How can I find joy on a day like today, with the temperature at a -15 Fahrenheit and my body is completely paralyzed?

I have to reach for joy outside myself. It can be found in the colorful posters that surround my desk, the rocks on top of my desk, a video of kittens or a laughing baby.

I find the joy outside me and then bundle it up and bring it inside my heart. From there, I wanted to radiate out toward everyone I see.

Looking for inspiration around joy, I found Amanda Gore’s work. I listened to her TED talk and bopped around her website.

She has 15 suggestions for how to “create joy spots”:

  1. Give people permission
  2. Bust stress and fear
  3. Have happiness review (what’s making you happy?)
  4. Change how you conduct staff meetings (what’s the best thing that’s happened since we last met?)
  5. Help people believe in themselves and what they are doing
  6. Create a TA DA (a culture of appreciation and recognition)
  7. Serve others with reverence
  8. Wear gratitude glasses – build hope
  9. Be a good finder.
  10. Listen and mean it (listen for the feeling, not the words.)
  11. Check your mood – inner peace rules! (Aim to stay calm, authentic, relaxed and joyful!)
  12. Be a spirit igniter – show compassion
  13. Be generous – examine your stories

Her PDF is written for leaders of work and family.

On this brutally cold and difficult day, I will let fear wash away be aware of my blessing, and look for the good.

  1. Let go – forgive
  2. Energy and vitality – connect your head and heart
