Delights of the Day (for the week)

As I go through my day, I watch for moments when the corners of my mouth turn up and my heart lifts. I note these moments of delight  in my journal and consider their patterns  here. I encourage you to be on the lookout for your Delight of the Day.

I discovered a new spiritual practice this week, which delights me.

Michelangelo's GodI have a friend who is going through a rough patch. I mean, this is one of those deals where, if you believe in a traditional God, you want to grab that flowing white beard God is wearing in the Michelangelo paintings, pull that light complexioned face up close to yours and snarl “enough already! Give the woman – and her family – a break NOW!”

I don’t believe in a traditional God anymore, but I like the idea of praying for people… Holding them in the light and wishing blessings on them. A while ago, I bought some blank watercolor cards. On Wednesday, I painted a card, while thinking about my friend and the quote “hold in your heart a stillness like the heart of a rose.” Yesterday, I wrote a note and mailed the card to her.

What a delights dazzle! In one short session, I could do something I’d love (paint) in a way that moves me (prayerfully) or someone I love and brighten her day (when she gets it). Win-win-win- win!

May you find delight each day.
